A Bit of History

A Bit of History - Revived

In the last newsletter I wrote about discontinuing the Bit Of History column. Considering that I rarely get any written feed back, the half dozen or so letters I received is a significant statement. All of the letters I received were in support of the Bit Of History Column. Those that wrote said that the concept of a little history story is consistent with the Museum and the newsletter. Obviously I agree, but the point is well taken that the stories need to be interesting, short and hopefully relevant to railroading in our area.

Therefore I will continue the column. I may try to do more research and reading and come up with stories and facts that you may find interesting.

Please send me your stories or even trivia. You can send them US mail to:

Mad River & NKP Museum
Attn.: Dale Owens
233 York Street
Bellevue, Ohio 44811

Or e-mail: madriver@onebellevue.com. Put into the subject line "Forward to Dale Owens".

I expressed my opinion to BOD in the last meeting, that we should put together a "History Book" of and about the museum. I would be willing to work on it, but I have not been around long enough to know all about the museum's history. If anybody is interested in helping to write and put it together, please contact me.

Surfing the internet - Charlie Wise sent me a link to a site that has about 1,500 pictures of mainly the N&W railroad. There are some great pictures. Check it out at http://www.sessions-station.com/N&W/index5.html

Note: We will have a February issue with the election ballot and catch up on the BOD meeting notes.

#7 Rides The Rails Again

Sitting quite unassumingly beside or behind the Fright House the former New York Central #7 Business Car has been waiting it's turn to be revitalized. But with a long list of needs and priorities the museum has kept it on the back burner.

As mentioned in a previous newsletter Carl Nourse a friend of the museum has come to the rescue of #7. Carl made an offer to the BOD to lease the business car for three years with an option for a fourth year. In exchange for use of the car, Carl is paying money up front, fixing the breaks and moving the car to Delaware, Ohio.

In Delaware. Carl will have the interior of the car cleaned and restored . The diesel generator will be fixed and brought back to life.

Carl and his helpers have several cars and an engine on a short stretch of track. Once a year at Christmas time he opens up his "real" trains and his model trains to the kids in the surrounding area. The kids get a treat of riding on a real train which some may never do otherwise. They then can view his extensive model layout and have a holiday snack. - Thanks Carl for presenting this opportunity.
