Rededication Of The Museum To William "Bill" Fuehring

In January, 2008 a group of Museum Members got together to chat about how to make this plaque display and re-dedication an event, rather than a ho hum hour. Ruth Fuehring and Chris Beamer gathered together Dean Meese, Dee Dee Runkle, Ray and Linnea Van Blarcum, Mike and Patsy Beamer, Dwayne Fuehring, Dennis Brandal along with Charlie and Dian Wise, aided and counseled by many others. The first question asked was "WHAT WOULD BILL DO"?

If you knew Bill, the answer of course was to have a big old shindig, "a stravaganza" as big as can be, to bring as many people and as much good feeling to his beloved museum as possible. How to do this? Well, a train of course. And here we hit a wall. The France Stone Engine was on hand in June of 76 to open the museum. It is back on hand at the museum now, named THE BILL FUEHRING. It was the last major museum project he worked on with his "geezers".  But, THE BILL FUEHRING is not main line road worthy according to the local railroad, Norfolk Southern and the FRA. Several alternatives were batted around such as having THE BILL FUEHRING Engine pull Ted Church's, museum owned Business Car 7 from Kilbourne St. to Southwest St. on the old LS & MS RR main line, (now museum trackage).  This idea was discarded due to track conditions. We knew we really needed to have something special moving on NS, as it did in 75 and 76. Now What?

When planning something to do with Bill Fuehring, it is always a good idea to again ask "WHAT WOULD BILL DO?" Would Bill ask NS for a train? Yes, of course he would. How could anyone re-dedicate a Railroad Museum with out a train, he would say? Would Bill just ask for a locomotive and a caboose or two. No, no, and heck no! No, by gosh.

Bill would ask NS to bring a whole Business Car Train, just like in days gone by, this time complete with 3 refurbished vintage F series diesel locomotives. It just so happens that NS has recently fielded such a train after upgrading both Business Cars and Motive Power. NS has also recently adopted a policy of making lots of trips with the refurbished train.

Bill might get turned down flat asking for such a train but he would ask anyway and he would expect a positive response. Once he had an idea, it became doable. To quote Steve Tobias "Bill had no shame" and that was said in a very positive manner.
