The Caboose Cable News Letter

May-June, 2009

This picture shows the new facade just added around the Monument Station passenger car "room".

It was always a dream to totally enclose this area, but the cost to install an acceptable sprinkler system, has so far been prohibitive.

Maybe someday our "rich uncle" will give us the money to complete it.

Dinner In The Diner - April 25 dawned clear, sunshiny and warm. The committee who had been working towards this evening had been hoping for warm weather, it had been quite chilly during the past few weeks while everyone was busy cleaning the diner, scrubbing down the kitchen (thanks Denny), washing dishes, etc. But honestly we got more than we asked for, it ended up being pretty warm in there before the night was over. New member and Chef, Phil Bowlin, his mother Janet, my daughter DeeDee and I met at the Bellevue Society of the Arts to prepare the meals in a Health Department approved kitchen. All the food was then transferred to the diner, meanwhile Denny had been busy setting the tables. And let me tell you, he's learned to do some pretty fancy napkin folding.

The dining car is filling up with hungry travelers.

Dave Robinson acted as a parking attendent and directed everyone to the Monument Station. Jeff Gray was outside to greet everyone and Patti kept the gift shop open until serving time. As the guests arrived and entered the Monument Station, through the gift shop, I welcomed them and Mike Beamer served them champagne. A nice beginning. Another new member, Matt Riegel punched tickets before they boarded the train. As they moved through the Silver Dome they were given a little history by Chris Beamer who explained that we're hoping to restore it to it's original condition and that this dinner was the first of many fund raising events we're planning to help make this a reality. Denny greeted them as they entered the diner and escorted them to their tables. Servers included Sue Brandal, Patti Gray and DeeDee and Emily Runkle. The meals served were all chosen from authentic railroad recipes, lips were smacking and compliments flying for the remainder of the evening.
