CABOOSE CABLE TO BECOME A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER

Caboose Cable

This issue of the Caboose Cable will be the last of the monthly issues. It will continue as a quarterly newsletter beginning in October. To date, only seven e-mail addresses have been provided so it appears that an electronic version will not be a viable alternative to the monthly paper version of the Caboose Cable. As always, if you have an article for the Caboose Cable, please send it to cabcabed@yahoo.com or you can send it to the museum.

Operation Lifesaver News

OLS

In 2010, the last year for which I have complete statistics, there were 260 fatalities from vehicle versus train collisions. That same year, 410 people died while trespassing on railroad property - more than one and a half times the number of vehicular deaths.

Railroad property is PRIVATE property, owned by the railroad. Often trespassers are hunting or fishing, biking, hiking, snowmobiling or 4-wheeling or just simply taking a shortcut to the store or home or crossing between railcars or ducking underneath them in taking that shortcut to school.

Bridges and tunnels are barely wider than the train so there is no sidewalk or other place of safety on most of these structures. Our slogan "Stay Off - Stay Away - Stay Alive" makes good sense.

Operation Lifesaver presentations are free and can be tailored to the individual audience. Contact www.oli.org to schedule a free presentation.
