Faces - of Museums

Sometimes The Faces of the Museum Are Unfamiliar To Most Of Us - But none the less beneficial to the overall good of the museum. Such is the case with Carl Nourse of Delaware, Ohio. You may remember the name from previous newsletters but very few of you would recognize him if he showed up at the museum. Carl is the young man (89 I think) who has accumulated an impressive collection of Lionel trains, and also a few real trains too. Once a year at Christmas time Carl runs his model and real trains for the kids in the Delaware area.

As Carl says "It the only chance that some of these kids have ever had (or ever will have) to ride in a real train car".

Carl started a relationship with the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum a few years ago by leasing the Roaring Camp coach for his Christmas train rides. Earlier this year Carl leased the #7 business car (or observation car as Carl refers to it) for a personal trip he wants to take.

On Saturday October 5, 2009 Carl, his friends and family invited the BOD down to see his incredible train collection, to see what he has done with the Roaring Camp, and the #7. We arrived around four o'clock and then took a tour of Carl's extensive Lionel train layout and collection.

Carl's friend and helper Bill took us through a restored freight house with two big model train layouts, and storage where there were literally thousands of cars, buildings

and other virtually priceless train pieces.

Carl specializes in complete sets, and has one of the first (if not the first) Lionel set. After the tour we went aboard the Roaring Camp and had hordevors and cider. Carl spoke about his life's work as an automobile dealer, and then how him and Bill got into the "Train Business". He talked about his plans for the Roaring Camp and the #7.

If any of you remember what bad shape the Roaring camp was in when it left Bellevue, you would be pleased with the results. It is now painted in Brown and lettered for Illinois Central
